Just when we thought the skate jams had come to an end for the summer the Skate Skool crew where on the roll again.
Only as far as Ashburton this time to promote the local skatepark going smokefree. Ashburton isn’t a big town so we were blown away with the turnout of youth as well as a few oldies hanging out around the edges.

26 competitors threw down their best tricks for the goods. The stair gap and rail saw plenty of attention that day with best trick going to Rolleston local Jesse Rogers with a frontside feeble on the rail.

Cheers to all those that came from as far as Christchurch. Certainly worth the drive if you have never skated the park, its only down the road* (*very long road). Big ups to Nick CP for happening to be there on the day and taking the sweet shots below.

Thanks also to Smokefree Mid Canterbury & The Ashburton District Council for supporting the event as well as Cheapskates and Skullcandy for the prizes.

Saturday’s Waltham Skate Jam proved a hit in the local community with loads of fresh faces and up to 150 people out to jam on ‘Optimus Grind’ — the Skate Skool mobile skatepark.

Our volunteers who ran the gear hire on the day were flat out with over 60 keen lil’ rippers having a go with the gear provided. Some sweet tricks went down in the best trick comp from the 25 competitors who put their bodies on the line for prizes supplied by Cheapskates and Skullcandy. Gnar trick of the day went to Brighton local Jordan Kidd, who hucked a ridiculous FS 360 Indy off the kicker launching out over 4–5 metres!

Shout-outs to the Christchurch City Council, SPARC, and Sport Canterbury for supporting the event, and also the Opawa Baptist Church for cooking up the free BBQ.

Cannonballs, finger flips and hurricanes were only a few of the tricks witnessed at last weekends Linwood Skate Jam. With a crowd of around 200 the vibe was good and the crowd were hungrier than ever with 400 sausages and our first ever hotdog eating competition. (Video to be uploaded here real soon!)

The weather was mint and some diverse skating went down on the street/ramp skate park that is Linwood. A big air comp went down and many launched sky high but none as high as Raph Doidge who took the supreme award of biggest air. James Thompson’s epic run can’t go without a mention either with his super clean flowing style.

Many thanks go out to the Hagley/Ferrymead community board of the Christchurch City Council for funding the event and Cheapskates, Skullcandy and Hellers for hooking up the goods.

The Cheapskates Skate Skool will continue to roll out a few more skate jams with our next event, The Waltham Skate Jam on Saturday 21st May. A few pics by Andy Brown and results below, check em’ out.

As the days are getting shorter and winter is approaching we’re coming down to the last few events for this season, and beginning our planning for the 2011/12 summer. But until then we have the Waltham Skate Jam to keep things rocking, taking place on Sat 21st May at Waltham School. This event was postponed as a result of the quake, and now it’s all on. Keep up to date on our Facebook Page for any changes.

Get the crew together and come on down for a good street session. See you there!

Riley and Muska, Stoked!
Riley and Muska, Stoked!

Easter weekend was full of treats for Christchurch skaters with the jaw dropping Volcom team demo on the Thursday as well as the Washington Skate Jam on the Saturday. This event had been postponed from the weekend prior due to wet weather but a good crowd of around 200 made it down for the very first mini ramp competition of the Cheapskates Skate Skool series.

The ramp dawgs finally had a chance to show off their skills with some serious shredding taking place in the pipe with the likes of Washington veteran Troy Newton and young gun Vincent Bolt charging around with some high speed grinds to impress the judges.

James Kingston was on form as always taking 1st place in the open and New Brighton local Eugene taking best trick with a kickflip indy over the hip. Cheers to Hellers for providing the free sausages for the BBQ. Thanks also to the sponsors who helped make it happen — Cheapskates, Skullcandy, Bones Bearings, The Christchurch City Council, Sport Canterbury and SPARC.

The Cheapskates Skate Skool has a few more events up its sleeve with a Linwood Skate Jam this Saturday 30th April.

Great day for a jam last Sunday at Jellie Park other than a cool breeze you would think it might still be summer. Good to see a lot of skaters amongst the scooter frenzy and some bloody good skateboarding went down that day. The ‘locals only’ Brighton crew were ripping as per usual with the usual suspects tearing it up.

The big air comp got underway after the best trick comp with a final showdown between Jordan Kidd, Josh Stewart, Eugene Corbin, Ryan DeSouza, and James Kingston with some ridiculous sky high airs taking place.

Cheers to the crew who helped out on the day and the sponsors for making it happen — Cheapskates, The Christchurch City Council, Fendalton/Waimairi Community Board, Sport Canterbury, Skullcandy, SPARC, and Hellers for the free sausages which we dished out all day long. Scroll down to check out some sweet pics by Andy Brown.

See you at our next event this Saturday 16th at Washington for a good ol’ mini ramp jam.
