On Monday the 25th July a southerly storm smashed its way up the South Island dropping up to a foot of snow in Christchurch. With snow still on the ground, come Friday the event lived up to its name and the annual Big Chill event went down a treat for the Linwood locals crazy enough to brave the cold.
Unlike our usual skate jams this event was more just a day out for the community with the addition of some bouncy stuff for the young ones, and the Gladiator Duel which saw some awesome battles throughout the day. All up a crowd of just over 200 demolished 300 sausages proudly donated by our friends at Hellers.
Due to the level of skating on the day we decided to run a casual best trick and big air competition. Best trick went to local ripper David Bo Yue Chen with a hardflip down the big drop, and the Big Air went to Josh Arapu for an array of big air tricks including a huge benihanna, a double nosegrab, and the one that sealed the deal — the benihanna finger shuvit!!
As per usual, Ariki Kingi casually ripped up earning himself some sweet Skullcandys as Grom of the Day with a double flip off the small 1/4 to the flat.
Thanks to the White Elephant Trust for bringing down the sounds and the W.E mix DJ’s and of course Cheapskates and Skullcandy for the prizes. This event was supported by the Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board of the Christchurch City Council.
The Cheapskates Skate Skool is having a bit of a winter break for a few weeks and is currently in planning for next summers series of skate jams with our first event lined up for Mid-September. This year was big, but next year will be even bigger and better with more events, more prizes, and more free sizzlers!
