Niall Titheridge » Hardflip over the hip
Here at Skate Skool we have had a fair bit of practice in running skate comps so when the call came to run an event for Backflips Clothing in their hometown of Timaru, we where more than keen for a road trip to good ol’ Caroline Bay skate park.
For those that don’t know. the park is pretty fun with some cool features but kind of all crammed in. The locals tore it up with some good lines and ultimately went home with most the prizes… the oversized 2 stair and 5 stair gaps witnessed plenty of action with 3 snapped boards amongst other bodily carnage.
The crew from Backflips Clothing went all out with a lolly scramble/product toss from a helicopter which had parents biting at their nails, the mechanical surfboard was also a hit. Overall the event was a huge success. Bigs ups to Backflips Clothing for organising the event, hopefully next time round Timaru can put on some warmer weather!
Here’s the results and a few pics from the day by our photog Andy Brown, great to see some names from Christchurch on the list. Well done Josh Bamford and Mikayla Gilmore for going hard and taking home some of the $5000 prize pool. For more pictures from the Backflips Clothing Skate Jam check out www.backflips.co.nz

Mexican Skateboard Wave
Saturday’s Waltham Skate Jam proved a hit in the local community with loads of fresh faces and up to 150 people out to jam on ‘Optimus Grind’ — the Skate Skool mobile skatepark.
Our volunteers who ran the gear hire on the day were flat out with over 60 keen lil’ rippers having a go with the gear provided. Some sweet tricks went down in the best trick comp from the 25 competitors who put their bodies on the line for prizes supplied by Cheapskates and Skullcandy. Gnar trick of the day went to Brighton local Jordan Kidd, who hucked a ridiculous FS 360 Indy off the kicker launching out over 4–5 metres!
Shout-outs to the Christchurch City Council, SPARC, and Sport Canterbury for supporting the event, and also the Opawa Baptist Church for cooking up the free BBQ.

To round off an awesome inaugural Summer Series of Skate Skool events, we’re finishing off down in Ashburton on Saturday the 4th June from 12pm (not really summer anymore we know!). This time it’s also to celebrate the launch of a Smokefree Ashburton Skatepark, and also the beginning of Matariki, the Maori New Year.
Included will be all of our usual event features, $500 prize pool, plus Pest 5 will be rattling the paint cans with a live graffiti demo.
We’re busy lining up next Summer’s events now with the first one dropping sometime in September, be sure to keep an eye out for some updates around our site and Facebook page.

On the 28th May we’ll be doing a little collab with Backflips Clothing to run a Skate Jam down in at the Timaru Bay Skate Park. It’ll be run along the lines of many of our Skate Jams with our mobile skate park, trick tips from the team, and a best trick comp, except this time it’s with a huge prize pool of $5,000, not bad eh?
Keep in the loop over at Backflip’s Facebook page for updates. See you there!

Cannonballs, finger flips and hurricanes were only a few of the tricks witnessed at last weekends Linwood Skate Jam. With a crowd of around 200 the vibe was good and the crowd were hungrier than ever with 400 sausages and our first ever hotdog eating competition. (Video to be uploaded here real soon!)
The weather was mint and some diverse skating went down on the street/ramp skate park that is Linwood. A big air comp went down and many launched sky high but none as high as Raph Doidge who took the supreme award of biggest air. James Thompson’s epic run can’t go without a mention either with his super clean flowing style.
Many thanks go out to the Hagley/Ferrymead community board of the Christchurch City Council for funding the event and Cheapskates, Skullcandy and Hellers for hooking up the goods.
The Cheapskates Skate Skool will continue to roll out a few more skate jams with our next event, The Waltham Skate Jam on Saturday 21st May. A few pics by Andy Brown and results below, check em’ out.

As the days are getting shorter and winter is approaching we’re coming down to the last few events for this season, and beginning our planning for the 2011/12 summer. But until then we have the Waltham Skate Jam to keep things rocking, taking place on Sat 21st May at Waltham School. This event was postponed as a result of the quake, and now it’s all on. Keep up to date on our Facebook Page for any changes.
Get the crew together and come on down for a good street session. See you there!
