Easter weekend was full of treats for Christchurch skaters with the jaw dropping Volcom team demo on the Thursday as well as the Washington Skate Jam on the Saturday. This event had been postponed from the weekend prior due to wet weather but a good crowd of around 200 made it down for the very first mini ramp competition of the Cheapskates Skate Skool series.
The ramp dawgs finally had a chance to show off their skills with some serious shredding taking place in the pipe with the likes of Washington veteran Troy Newton and young gun Vincent Bolt charging around with some high speed grinds to impress the judges.
James Kingston was on form as always taking 1st place in the open and New Brighton local Eugene taking best trick with a kickflip indy over the hip. Cheers to Hellers for providing the free sausages for the BBQ. Thanks also to the sponsors who helped make it happen — Cheapskates, Skullcandy, Bones Bearings, The Christchurch City Council, Sport Canterbury and SPARC.
The Cheapskates Skate Skool has a few more events up its sleeve with a Linwood Skate Jam this Saturday 30th April.
The events aren’t over yet! With a couple of events being cancelled from the Earthquake, we feel there’s room to squeeze in a couple more to make up for them.
We’re heading back to Linwood Skatepark for the Linwood Skate Jam this Saturday 30th April, short notice we know, so be sure to spread the word! Best trick comp with $600 worth of prizes up for grabs, free gear hire and trick tips, and of course the free BBQ. Get down there during the week and get your lines on lock down! See you there!
With the last team demo coming to Christchurch over 5 years ago (?) there was definitely a solid turnout to the Volcom Brand Jeans Tour at Washington Park today. I only got down for the first 45 minutes or so, but that was I needed to see the level of talent these guys have. Having Max in the mix was pretty cool too. One stand out which I missed was Collin Provost’s gap from the quarter to front lip on the big ledge. That doesn’t happen everyday. See some more of his recently released b-sides here. Pretty mind blowing!
Here’s some footage of Collin Provost who ripped it up with the Volcom team at Washington earlier today. It’s leftover footage from what didn’t make it into the final edit of Emerica’s Stay Gold. Enjoy.
The Volcom Brand Jeans Tour has been making its way down through New Zealand last week, with a stop of at Washington this Thursday 21st at 4:30pm. Riders including Shane Azar, Caswell Berry, Chima Ferguson, Max Couling, Jake Duncombe, Collin Provost, Aaron Suski and Ben Raemers will be ripping it up for your entertainment. Oh, and bring down your old jeans and you’ll get hooked up a free hat! See you down there!
Friends of ours are putting on a series of skate holiday programmes from the 27–29th April. Destinations include Rolleston, Rangiora, and Hanmer.
Get amongst it and find out more by downloading the brochure and registration form here (827kb).
Great day for a jam last Sunday at Jellie Park other than a cool breeze you would think it might still be summer. Good to see a lot of skaters amongst the scooter frenzy and some bloody good skateboarding went down that day. The ‘locals only’ Brighton crew were ripping as per usual with the usual suspects tearing it up.
The big air comp got underway after the best trick comp with a final showdown between Jordan Kidd, Josh Stewart, Eugene Corbin, Ryan DeSouza, and James Kingston with some ridiculous sky high airs taking place.
Cheers to the crew who helped out on the day and the sponsors for making it happen — Cheapskates, The Christchurch City Council, Fendalton/Waimairi Community Board, Sport Canterbury, Skullcandy, SPARC, and Hellers for the free sausages which we dished out all day long. Scroll down to check out some sweet pics by Andy Brown.
*UPDATE* The date is now the 23rd April due to rain. See you then!
As we near the end of our Summer Series we come back to the main park we all know and love — Washington. Not to say this will be the end of our events; it’s only just beginning.
$800 worth of prizes will be up for grabs, and our trademark free BBQ, free gear hire, and free trick tips from the Skate Skool team. Come down from 12–3pm on the 23rd April for an afternoon of good times!
