The annual Thomson Skate Jam took place last Saturday. Amongst the heavily hit suburb of New Brighton the local skate facility showed no obvious signs of earthquake damage. Over 400 people enjoyed the free event which kicked off with a demo from the ‘locals only’ skate crew.

The bowl competition was the highlight of the event with 42 competitors as young as 7 year old Harry Kitchen right through to 50 year old local Mike Smith. People crowded around the bowl to witness some of the finest skateboarders in Christchurch.

The level of skating was pretty high and some amazing skateboarding took place at the skatepark which was upgraded nearly two years ago. Bowl skating has thrived in Christchurch since the upgrade and this was evident on the day. Carnage was kept to a minimum with the only injury being a dislocated shoulder by Ryan DeSouza which won him a new deck for best slam.

This event was funded by the Burwood/Pegasus community board and supported by big list of sponsors including local skate store Cheapskates, Sport Canterbury and The Christchurch City Council. A massive thank you to the Quest Crew for helping make this event possible and cooking the BBQ on the day.

Skate companies from across New Zealand jumped on board to support the event with over $3000 worth of donated prizes. Thanks to all of them for helping out the local skate scene: Skullcandy, Vans, Bones Wheels and Bearings, Traffick, Nelson Creek Skateboards, Volcom, ABC, Lower, Vic, Manual Magazine and Hellers for the free sausages.
