Pencil in the 10th April for the upcoming Jellie Park Skate Jam, the last event there went off so this one is not to be missed! As usual we’re putting on a best trick comp, free tips from the Skate Skool team, free gear hire, and a free BBQ. $600 worth of prizes will be up for grabs so come down and get amongst it.
The annual Thomson Skate Jam took place last Saturday. Amongst the heavily hit suburb of New Brighton the local skate facility showed no obvious signs of earthquake damage. Over 400 people enjoyed the free event which kicked off with a demo from the ‘locals only’ skate crew.
The bowl competition was the highlight of the event with 42 competitors as young as 7 year old Harry Kitchen right through to 50 year old local Mike Smith. People crowded around the bowl to witness some of the finest skateboarders in Christchurch.
The level of skating was pretty high and some amazing skateboarding took place at the skatepark which was upgraded nearly two years ago. Bowl skating has thrived in Christchurch since the upgrade and this was evident on the day. Carnage was kept to a minimum with the only injury being a dislocated shoulder by Ryan DeSouza which won him a new deck for best slam.
This event was funded by the Burwood/Pegasus community board and supported by big list of sponsors including local skate store Cheapskates, Sport Canterbury and The Christchurch City Council. A massive thank you to the Quest Crew for helping make this event possible and cooking the BBQ on the day.
Skate companies from across New Zealand jumped on board to support the event with over $3000 worth of donated prizes. Thanks to all of them for helping out the local skate scene: Skullcandy, Vans, Bones Wheels and Bearings, Traffick, Nelson Creek Skateboards, Volcom, ABC, Lower, Vic, Manual Magazine and Hellers for the free sausages.
Next event : Jellie Skate Jam — Sunday 10th April
After weeks of sombre earthquake related news flooding the front pages of The Press, it’s time to turn the tables and welcome the week on a higher note. The Thomson Skate Jam on Saturday went off big time, and our local ripper Dan Kelcher already famous from the poster has now graced the front page of the Press. You can read the online write up on Stuff here.
Keep an eye out for full results and photos posted here very soon.
Here’s a sweet collection of local riders from Simon Goss. Hell, even Asher’s in there rocking the long hair! Sad to think a lot of those spots are now either destroyed or pretty different. Check it out.
It takes more than mother nature’s wrath to stop us from putting on the Thomson Park Skate Jam! When this park was built, it was built to last. The earthquake may have caused havoc across our city but many of our parks still stand strong, including Thomson Park.
With a powerful combination of great people and sponsors coming together, we’re proud to announce this event will still go ahead. Spread the word, it’s going to be huge! Keep up to date with any updates on our Facebook page.
It was business as usual for the Cheapskates Skate Skool last weekend as we hit Ash Vegas for the Ashburton Skate Jam. The local park is super fun with some pretty cool lines to skate. The crew were stoked to escape Christchurch for the day and the place was buzzing with heaps of local skaters tearing around. Some of the Christchurch crew headed south for the day including veteran rippers Troy and Raph.
All up it was a pretty sweet day with some good skating. Cheers to those who came down and survived the frenzy. Check below for pics and results.

Here’s a sweet clip of the Nelson crew getting ‘onboard’ to support the Grid City! The support our city has received from both around NZ as well as world wide has been amazing. Nice work guys.
First of all, we hope all of our skate community in and around the Christchurch area are coping ok with the aftermath of the earthquake — it was definitely the gnarliest we’ve felt! As a result we’ve had to postpone both the Waltham Skate Jam and the Redcliffs Skate Jam. We’re currently doing everything we can to keep the Thomson Park Jam on the 26th going ahead, we’ll keep you all updated on progress with these events, or you can follow our Facebook page for details.
So here’s our next event (this Sunday) down in Ashvegas, away from the aftershocks which we are aware a fraying some nerves. So if you’re keen for a little trip down SH1 for an afternoon away from it all, then come on down! All our usual gear hire, skate demo, trick tips, and best trick comp will be on, so gather a crew together and head south! See you there!
