Formerly planned to be the Riccarton Skate Jam, we confirmed a new skate spot in the Countdown Car park in Hornby—so we obviously changed it to the Hornby Skate Jam. Saturday 12th February from 12–3pm down at Chappie Place (off Main South Road). If you have any troubles, just listen out for urethane rolling on concrete and plywood (or Kev’s beautiful voice).
See who’s up to claim prizes in the best trick comp, these have been getting bigger and bigger with each event. If you’re just beginning, you can pick up some tips from the Skate Skool team, and hire a board or inline skates for free. Also if you’re serious about picking up more skills, check out our upcoming Learn to Skate Programmes.
See ya down there!

The first event of the 2011 Cheapskates Skate Skool series kicked off on Sunday with the Jellie Park Skate Jam. Despite the crappy weather, the crowd of around 300 were amped to be there. The layout of the park proved interesting and the direction of flow created a ‘Woodford Glen style’ derby feel with over 100 skaters ripping around the park luckily without too much carnage.
The free BBQ was a hit and free board hire gave those without wheels a chance to give it a go with help from the Skate Skool crew. The Brighton ‘Locals Only’ crew were on form as usual and took away half the prizes with some burly tricks and big airs. North Island ABC rider Brad Christensen killed it in the best trick comp with a hard flip from the top of the 1/4 to the flat earning him 1st place in the 16 & Unders.
Linwood ripper (and James Kingston’s protege) — Ariki Kingi stepped up to compete with the big boys and took out the 13 & Unders—and he’s only 10! The heavy hitters threw down some gnarly tricks in the open division with local skater/snowboarder Ciaran Dollin hucking a BS 360 melon straight off the slopes.
Cheers to all that came down and those that helped make it happen.
This event was proudly supported by the Fendalton/Waimairi Community Board and sponsored by Cheapskates, Skullcandy, The Christchurch City Council, SPARC, Sport Canterbury and Hellers for the sausages.

We’re hammering into 2011 with plenty of events with our Summer Series. After our Rolleston Skate Skool Launch Event last year, we’ve decided to come back for round two—Skate Jam style! We’ve got free gear hire, trick tips and a demo from our team, as well as a competition with lots of goodies up for grabs. Come on down for a cruisy afternoon.

In between all of our events lined up in the Skate Skool Summer Series is the Volcom Wild in the Parks at Washington on Saturday 29th January. The past events in Christchurch have always gone off with a hit and I’m sure this one won’t be any different. You can download an entry form here, or like me if you’re just keen to chill and watch, head on down on the day.
