Some nek level mayhem went down last Saturday, quite possibly the gnarliest throw-down we have seen at a Regional comp ever! The Canterbury skate scene is booming and the weekends antics were absolute proof of this.
With the New Zealand Skateboarding Nationals set to return to Christchurch next year. If this event is any indication of the calibre of skaters NZ is producing then we are in for one hell of a show come Easter weekend!
The weather was primo and a solid crowd of spectators encircled the madness that unfolded at Washington Skate Park.
The Open mens final saw a total of 18 skaters put it all on the line with player of the day once again going to James Kingston taking 1st in Open Mens as well as Best Trick for the 3rd year in a row.

Yet again, the Thomson Skate Jam blew minds as bowl shredders from around the South Island got together for an afternoon session at the 9th annual Thomson Skate Jam! Over 40 competitors threw down in the comp as young as 8 years old right through to 43 year old legend Adam Wheeldon in the veterans division. The event also saw the most girls we have seen at any skate competition ever! The vibe was awesome, the sun was shining and some serious 4-wheeled business took place for a crowd of over 400 people to enjoy!

We’re amping for this one! Its always a goodie and this years Bowl Jam wont disappoint! Join us in New Brighton as we host the Thomson Skate Jam. Alongside the multi division Bowl competition we will have our roaming Skate Skool instructors to help out any inspired beginners and with free gear hire available! This is a family friendly event for all ages. divisions on the day include 13 & Under, 16 & Under, Open Mens, Womans and a 30+ Veterans Division in a jam format comp with over $4k worth of prizes up for grabs. Next stop, its Waltham School! This event is perfect for beginners with the big open flat concrete court down at the school. Sadly, Waltham Bowl just simply isn’t big enough for our event! We will have have the Cheapskates Skate Skool team floating about to help with tips and tricks with free gear hire available on the day! There will be best trick comp with great prizes plus a free BBQ and even a Bouncy castle for the youngsters! Sounds to me like a primo day out for the family!
Join us for the 1st ever Halswell Skate Jam. Postponed from December due to poor weather. We’re hoping to raise awareness of the need for a local skate park for Halswell!! So get along and help the local community and have a bloody good time in the process! We’ll have our mobile skate park set up in the domain and will be cranking tunes along with free gear hire and coaching for beginners, we’ll also put on a best trick comp with prizes up for grabs from Cheapskates and Skullcandy! St. Albans spine ramp is one of the funnest ramps in town and this event is gonna be just that! Its going down on the 24th Jan and since your on holiday theres no excuse. Next stop Halswell!!!! The community are pushing for a skate park in the area and so what better way to justify a need than a good ol’ skate jam. We’ll be set up in the Halswell domain carpark with the ramps, all are welcome to learn to skate with boards and blades up for free hire plus a best trick comp with decks wheels and more up for grabs! Get along and support this community ‘push for a park’!
Last weekend Cheapskates hosted the 1st Canterbury Skateboarding Regionals since the major $3.2 million upgrade earlier in the year with skaters flocking from across the South Island to qualify for the New Zealand Skateboarding Nationals, it sure was an epic day! The weather turned it on and the calibre of skating was the heaviest we have ever seen!
A crowd of over 500 people packed out the street arena for an afternoon of hammers from some of New Zealand’s up and coming shredders. With 42 competitors in total across all divisions, its a good sign that skateboarding in the grid city is on the rise.
Over $3000 worth of prizes was up for grabs thanks to all the supporting sponsors – Cheapskates, Skullcandy, Vans Shoes, Electric Sunglasses, Akcent Skateboards, Thunder Trucks, Traffick, Manual Magazine, Bones Wheels and Neff.
